The Royal Brunei Police Force has apprehended a suspect, believed to be involved in an impersonation syndicate during an operation conducted by the Brunei Muara Police District together with the Cyber Crime Investigation Division, Criminal Investigation Department.
The operation was carried out on 21st April morning following public tip-offs. The suspect, a 23-year-old foreign national, was apprehended on suspicion of acting as a runner by posing as a government official to deceive victims. He was found to have collected money directly from victims who had been threatened and manipulated via phone calls by other members of the syndicate. From the operation, several electronic devices including smartphones and tablets, as well as a vehicle were seized to assist further investigations. The case is being investigated under the Penal Code (Chapter 22) and Computer Misuse Act (Chapter 194).
